No Bars, No Problem: Downloading a Map Area for Offline Riding in BraapTrax
The best riding is usually where your phone gives up. Here's how to download an area in BraapTrax before you lose service, and what's Pro.
You know the spot. The pavement ends, the canyon walls close in, and your phone drops from three bars to a spinning wheel. Right where the riding gets good, your map turns into a gray grid and you're guessing which fork is the one you wanted.
The fix is simple, and it takes a minute at the trailhead or, better, the night before: download the area.
What offline download does
BraapTrax lets you draw a box on the map and download that area's map imagery to your phone. Once it's saved, you can ride inside that box without service and still see the map under you. It's a Pro feature, and it works both before you roll out and during a ride, so you can still grab an area if you realize at the gate that you forgot.
That's the whole idea, and it's built for exactly the days when the ride goes sideways and the signal goes first. No special mode to remember, no separate app. Draw the box, download it, ride.
How to do it
- Open the map where you're headed. Pan and zoom to the riding area you plan to cover.
- Draw a box around it. Cover the whole loop, plus a margin. If you think you'll wander, make the box bigger than feels necessary.
- Download the area. Do this on wifi if you can. Bigger boxes mean more imagery to pull down.
- Check it before you leave. Pan around inside the box with your phone in airplane mode. If the map is there, you're set.
Tips from riders who've been burned
None of this is complicated, but a little prep keeps a good ride from turning into a long walk out.
- Download at home, not at the trailhead. Trailhead service is the same bad service you're trying to avoid.
- Draw it wider than your route. The wrong turn is the one that takes you off the edge of your box.
- Cover the whole day. If your ride day spans two zones, make sure both are inside what you downloaded.
Free versus Pro
Be clear about this part. Recording a ride, the post-ride summary, GPX export of your own rides, season headline stats, and hazard reports are all free. Offline area download is Pro. If you're on a free account you can still see it, and tapping it opens the paywall. The app never forces you to subscribe.
Pro also covers saved routes and GPX import, My Content (campsites, water, trailheads), ride photos, the Garage, and deeper stats. Load a saved route and download the area around it, and you've got a ride plan that works with zero bars.
Is it worth Pro?
If you ride anywhere with spotty service, this is the feature that pays for itself the first time you'd otherwise be lost. Pro is $4.99/month or $39.99/year, and new subscribers get a 1-month free trial through the App Store introductory offer. Subscriptions are managed and cancelled through the App Store or Google Play.
Get BraapTrax on the App Store or on Google Play. Download your area, hit record, and go find the good stuff. Then ride it without staring at a spinning wheel.
